Local MP supports All the Little Shops
At a recent meeting of representatives from independent retailers in Ludlow, local MP Phillip Dunne chaired a meeting which highlighted the importance of independent retailers in the high street.
"I am one of five Conservative MPs who have agreed to take evidence for the Campaign for Enterprise Commission into this subject. Small Shops on the High Street add to the overall shopping experience of Ludlow and this commission will help identify what has made Ludlow such a successful example of independent retailing and what needs to be done to secure its future and that of small shops on other high streets around the country" said Phillip Dunne, MP.
The meeting was also told of the launch of All The Little Shops – a first in the UK - a website initiative created in Shropshire to enable independent retailers to trade online, on a level playing field with larger supermarkets and multiples. The website has been piloted in Shrewsbury and will be expanded early in the New Year throughout the Shropshire. Once fully operational All The Little Shops is intended to be launched Nationally.
More than just another directory - the website has a fully integrated e-commerce system which allows visitors to shop online via a secure payment gateway. A key feature is "Reserve and Wrap" which encourages purchasing on-line but allows the retailer to offer added value by wrapping the gift free and encouraging the shopper to call into the shop to collect the item when next in town. This cross fertilises footfall across the town centre.
"More and more shopping is being purchased online, but recent figures suggest that more than 40% of all high street purchases are also being researched online. The All The Little Shops concept has been designed to allow retailers to take advantage of e-commerce but also to drive footfall into the town centre and into the shops. We already have over 50 shops and 700 products online which is very encouraging" says Peter Riches, Managing Director of All The Little Shops Limited. "Key to the development of the project has been seed funding and support through local businesses and enterprise groups such as Shropshire Enterprise Partnership. This has meant we have been able to offer the first 50 retailers a fully integrated e-commerce solution totally free." says Riches.
